So today, we're going to talk about Mamdani and an Arabic mandate in New York.

Yeah, we have a fun news item today.

A post went viral on social media, and the stated policy of New York's newly elected mayor, Mammdani,

elicited quite a response from Republicans and Arabic understanders on the right.

I think the one that started the ruckus was, quote,

Zoran Mammdani is expected to require all New York Elementary School students to learn Arabic

numerals.

If you don't know, the numbers we all use every day are Arabic numerals, and this was

clearly satirical.

Posts with similar messages were then circulated. Just the top three posts I found were viewed

more than 15 million times. That's an X and a V for those who don't use Arabic numerals.

The responses were exactly what you would picture. Accounts that spend their days telling you

how well they understand Islam fell for a bit and began

manufacturing outrage. It was like the Orson Well's War of the World's broadcast for bigots.

Panic spread across right-wing circles. Major MAGA figures expressed their anger at the claimed new policy,

or sought confirmation that the policy was really being enacted. There were the typical racist and

bigoted comments, fear-mongering, claims of it being a DEI program, statements saying people were pulling their children from school, along

with the obligatory claims that somehow it was Obama's fault.

Prominent liberal accounts fed the confusion by celebrating the policy, by saying, this is what I voted for, and talking about how it would make their children

more capable of competing in the international marketplace. In related news, California has
