Summary

We are talking about both type 1 and type 2. Did you know that sugar does not cause diabetes? Not even type 2? Did you know that weight gain does not cause diabetes either? Did you know that the issue with diabetes is that your cells aren't getting sugar, not that you shouldn't eat sugar? Today I'm talking to dietitian and diabetes expert Lauren Newman RD, LD, and busting lots of unhelpful myths about diabetes. In the episode we also break down the difference between type 1 and type 2, but debunk a lot of blame that people with type 2 get. Type 2 is caused by metabolic factors, often genetic or chronic stress related - it’s a dysfunction of the way the body metabolizes sugar. And/or insulin resistance, which means the cells aren’t getting sugar even though it’s in the blood stream. But our cells need sugar to keep us alive. Insulin resistance is not caused by consumption of carbs or sugar or (or higher weight). There are lots and lots fo reasons people might have insulin resistance, one of them, is yo-yo dieting and weight cycling. The other important thing to remember, is that Type 2 diabetes it can and does exist in thin people and people who eat an objectively “healthy diet.” Conversely, lots and lots of people eat a lot of sugar and never get diabetes. People blame it on the carbs or sugar, but it’s the underlying conditions in the first place. Another example, is that exercise is good for insulin resistance, with or without weight loss, but if people start to exercise and lose weight, and their symptoms improve, weight loss tends to gets the credit, when exercise should be getting the credit. Blaming sugar is easy, but it is still missing the mark, and is an oversimplification that can also make people dysfunctional with food which ironically, can exacerbate insulin resistance all on its own. Hello, it's Caroline. I'm just here to tell you that this episode that you're about to listen to

was recorded during a time when I still used Patreon. I do not use Patreon anymore, but you can find

Lastly, this podcast is extremely messy. And it was actually intentionally messy and

0:29.5

unstructured because that was the only way I could inspire myself to start and continue this

0:34.3

podcast. I needed the lowest stakes possible. And though this podcast

0:39.0

remains very low budget and has remained messy throughout the years until now,

0:44.3

if you want slightly more structured and streamlined episodes, listen to the more recent episodes.

0:50.2

All right. Enjoy. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Fuck a Diet podcast.

1:00.1

I was about to say Fuck a Diet Radio, which is what it used to be called.

1:04.7

And I've decided to do weekly episodes during this quarantine without really thinking about the fact

1:13.6

that I am actually already busier than I usually am.

1:20.6

And I don't know what I was thinking. I wasn't thinking. So here we are. We'll see how long that the every week

1:28.0

thing keeps on going. But I can't believe that I'm busier than I usually am. I know that

1:36.0

actually a lot of people are because a lot of people are trying to work from home and

1:40.8

homeschool their children and everything else. But I think because my whole

1:48.5

job was already completely remote anyway. And now I feel like since everyone's home and

1:57.3

everyone has to be remote, people are trying. I think there's sort of this nervousness that people have that they need to be productive

2:07.5

or do something new and different and interesting during this time.

2:10.7

And I totally get it.

2:11.9

I mean, I get that that helps people's anxiety.
