So today, we're going to talk about the Fourth of July and Taxes.

We're going to talk about America, myths, taxes, and a question.

So here's the question.

Bell, I know you don't like Trump, but you have to respect his political skills.

He's got Democrats arguing against lowering taxes at July 4th. It's genius. He set the deadline.

He knew this would happen. You might call it 4D chess. Is there anything more un-American than wanting

taxes on 4th of July? Our country was born from patriots not wanting to pay taxes. You know what I think

4D chess really is? A bunch of rich people convincing most Americans that the revolution was about taxes.

Are y'all ready to really examine a piece of widely accepted American mythology? Most Americans

will tell you the revolution was over taxes. It's a widely accepted belief. I don't believe it was. You know why? I read the

Declaration of Independence. If you read the Declaration of Independence, you won't think so either.

Remember, by the time the Declaration of Independence was written, fighting had been going on for more than a year.

The famed Shot Herd Round the World was fired on April 19, 1775, not July 4th, 1776. Like any long

breakup, the person doing the leaving thinks about all the reasons they have to leave.

The Declaration of Independence is mainly a list of those reasons.

It's 1,320 or so words of, it's not me, it's you, and this is why.

It has a giant list of all the things the king did to warrant

the breakup. The word taxes appears one time, and it appears in a sentence that says the actual problem

wasn't the taxes themselves, but the lack of consent to the taxes. Quote, for imposing taxes on us without our consent. During the years of fighting before the declaration, the colonists really were rebelling. Most thought reconciliation would occur. And then on January 10 10, 1776, Thomas Payne dropped his new

pamphlet, common sense. That was the catalyst for revolution. That one, I think, is 20,000 words

or so. None of those words are taxes. But he does mention the concept. But
