Summary

Money can be such a taboo and uncomfortable topic - and yet, we all make it! Featuring my first ever show guest Jandra Sutton, we dive deep in this episode into how transparency around money can be empowering. You'll learn how to ask for a raise, negotiate salary, or raise your freelancing rates.

Jandra Sutton is the co-founder of the Paid Well Society alongside Tiffany Napper, and she also writes for Business Insider, where she recently published an article on upping her rates after realizing she had undervalued her worth.

Hey guys, you're listening to the Big Conversations podcast. I'm your host, Haley Hoffman

0:06.3

Smith. I'm an entrepreneur, a bestselling author, and a Forbes most influential speaker. You're in the

0:11.9

right place if you're ready to step into the bigger life that you were destined for because we're

0:16.7

about to get real on how to do so. So let's get started with today's big conversation.

Hey guys, welcome back to the big conversations podcast. I am so excited about our guest today.

Her name is Jandra Sutton. And I stumbled across her because we're Facebook friends and

0:34.6

Facebook friends with a lot of really cool female entrepreneurs.

0:43.1

But she published an article on Business Insider where she is a writer that was all about personal finance, but specifically how she had realized that she was being undervalued at work and how she

0:48.8

upped her rates and has been growing her net worth ever since.

0:52.1

And this immediately stood out to me because I too

0:55.2

have had a fraught relationship with my own rates. We'll get into a little bit more of a personal

1:00.9

story behind me realizing I wasn't getting paid my worth at my first ever magazine job and how I've

1:07.6

evolved to where I am today. But I'm particularly excited to hear from De, and hopefully you guys will leave today with some really good tips for how you can

1:14.7

implement confidence and raising your own rates and having those conversations and knowing

1:19.1

without a doubt that you're worth it. So thank you so much for coming on the show, Jandra.

1:24.4

Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much for having me. Of course. So I'd love to get started with hearing

1:29.6

a bit about your background and especially your background when it comes to money and being in a

1:34.7

place where you felt like your income wasn't matching your worth and what it was like when you

1:38.3

approached your boss about that. Yeah. So I have a unique background. I definitely relate to the phrase multi-passion and entrepreneur.

1:48.6

So when I first started in my professional career, I was working in marketing unintentionally.

1:54.9

And I was working for an iPhone startup based out of San Francisco.

1:59.2

And I really loved it, but it was also like a 24-7 on-call customer service slash marketing job, which ended up being a lot. And at the time, I remember being thrilled because I was making $30,000 a year. And it was my first job out of college. And I was like, man, I'm basically loaded. Like, I'm going to put up my student debt so fast.
