Hello and welcome to the scriptures and real podcast.

0:14.0

This is the podcast where we talk about elements in the scriptures that become real to us so that we can draw more power from them because we need that power in our lives to help us keep becoming more holy and be anchored in and coming towards Christ.

0:27.1

I'm your host, Kerry Mealstein, and this is going to be a short cast, the last of a long bunch because it's a huge reading list for this week, but this one will be about Solomon. So we're,

0:41.4

we're really only going to touch on a couple of elements. We could do several short casts or

0:47.1

full podcasts on the chapters that we're reading for Solomon today and the chapters that we're

0:53.7

not reading,

0:54.9

but we've already had so many hours of podcasts for this week already. We're just going to make this

1:00.7

touching on, we're selectively touching on important elements. Chapter one of First Kings is worth

1:09.6

noting. Now, let's also be clear that as we go from Second

1:12.2

Samuel to First Kings, there's not really a break. Just think of them as all the same book. It's

1:16.4

just, it just keeps going. Same storyline, probably the same redactors or a team of redactors and so on.

1:23.5

In any case, the story starts with kind of a crisis. David is old enough that he really isn't able to do much anymore. This is kind of highlighted by the fact that he can't even heat himself. And so he has someone who keeps him warm and so on. And Nathan is aware that it's been prophesied that Solomon would become king,

1:48.5

but that David has another son, Adaniah, who is aiming at becoming king. So the stories in the

1:55.5

Bible, especially this part with First and Second Samuel and First and Second Kings have all the intrigue that you

2:02.7

can find in any Shakespeare or, I mean, Shakespeare stories are often based in real life as well,

2:09.1

but any of the dramas of the kings of Europe or anything else, I mean, there's all sorts of

2:14.0

intrigue and stuff going on here. So Adonijah wants to be king. He sees that his father is getting less and less able and he can kind of get away with things.

2:22.4

And so he is starting to act like a king to make it so that he becomes the default king.

2:27.4

And he is the next oldest son now that Absalon is dead.

2:32.4

So Adonijah just starts doing kingly things and he gets quite a following.

2:36.2

A number of very important and powerful people are following and supporting him as king.

2:43.3

And there are also a number of important and powerful people that will support Solomon as king.
