0:16.0 | Leptin is mainly known as an appetite hormone. |
0:19.0 | So the more you have, the less hungry you are. |
0:22.0 | But leptin also has a huge immune function that I want to talk about. |
0:27.0 | And as a side note, the Greek word for the word leptin means thin |
0:32.0 | because of the suppression of the appetite. |
0:35.0 | When you increase leptin, the hungry goes away |
0:38.0 | because there's a signal from the fat cell to your brain, |
0:41.0 | specifically the hypothalamus, telling the brain we have enough nutrition or food. |
0:46.0 | But when leptin is low, you are hungry. |
0:49.0 | Leptin is made by your fat cells and the intestinal cells. |
0:55.0 | Here's a problem. |
0:56.0 | Chronicly high levels of leptin start causing what's called leptin resistance. |
1:01.0 | Now, this is very similar to insulin resistance, |
1:03.0 | where you have this high level of insulin produced by consuming a lot of carbohydrates. |
1:08.0 | And what happens over time is your receptors start to downgrade |
1:12.0 | and now you can't absorb that hormone anymore. |
1:16.0 | Same exact thing happens with leptin. |
1:18.0 | High levels of leptin over a long period of time kind of desensitize the receptor. |
