This is Rumble Strip, I'm Erica Heilman.

I think Pork Futures was your big concern last year. I think it was. There's still

plenty of bacon at the store so I'm not worried about that anymore. That's my

friend Leland. I met Leland when he was in school with my son Henry at

Callis Elementary. Once when he was over playing at our house in fourth grade I

cornered him with a microphone and I've been cornering him every springtime ever

since just to find out what he's doing what he's thinking about.

He's a junior in high school now spending most of his time at a technical school working on carpentry, he has

his license and his own truck.

We've sat and talked out by his barn which overlooks a field and a vernal pool full of spring peepers which is there because of a stuck culvert.

I'm all right, given everything going on. I joined the fire department. I've just been kind of helping out cleaning trucks, sweeping floors, stuff like that, learning some things. I guess I decided to do

it because I just wanted a way of getting out in the community and helping out. Being useful as much as you can. I'm enjoying

school more than in the past.

What did you do this year? You were doing carpentry, right?

Yeah, I'm in the building trades class.

I mean, I've learned a lot things about building a house. I could be a carpenter for the rest of my life or I could give it up after high school. I don't know yet.

College or some version of college is that in your sites at all? Are you thinking about that?

I'm thinking about college. I'm not closing any doors right now. It kind of depends on what happens this next year with.

If I find a job that I really like and it pays enough for me then I don't really have a reason in my mind to go to college after that.
