Long before the arrival of pioneer families, Native peoples traveled, hunted, and camped throughout these rugged mountains, leaving behind traces of their presence—and, according to local tradition, one of Alabama's most enduring legends. At the heart of that legend is a mysterious "goalpost tree," said by some to have marked sacred ground, and a tale passed down through generations that tells of love, war, and a bloody battle between Chickasaw and Creek warriors.
