Long before the arrival of pioneer families, Native peoples traveled, hunted, and camped throughout these rugged mountains, leaving behind traces of their presence—and, according to local tradition, one of Alabama's most enduring legends. At the heart of that legend is a mysterious "goalpost tree," said by some to have marked sacred ground, and a tale passed down through generations that tells of love, war, and a bloody battle between Chickasaw and Creek warriors. 1:35.7	Rather, today, we're going to explore a truly unique place in this forest that's shrouded
1:44.1	and even more mystery.
1:46.8	A location known as Indian Tomb Holler.
2:04.7	You see, as I mentioned in the Aunt Jenny episode,
2:13.9	Bankhead contains a number of archaeological sites that testified to a long history of human occupation there.
2:20.3	Evidence that the region was once used extensively by native peoples who lived, traveled, hunted, and sought shelter in these mountains for thousands of years prior to pioneer families like the Brooks.
2:30.3	Kinlock Shelter is one of these places. It's a large sandstone rock shelter tucked beneath a
2:39.4	towering bluff deep within the forest where archaeologists believe native peoples likely camped,
2:47.9	prepared food, and sought protection from the weather while traveling through the region.
2:54.6	And although this site was never used as a permanent settlement, evidence of its use remained to this
3:02.3	very day in the form of rock art. Ancient pictographs painted on the sandstone walls that have survived for centuries.
3:14.6	Kinlock's shelter is hardly unique, though.
3:18.4	Throughout Bankhead, sandstone overhangs and bluff shelters are scattered all across the forest.
