Summary

Since the #LeaveLOUD movement began, the most common question we have been asked is “Where do we go now?” Every person who is taking the journey toward finding healthy spaces of flourishing will inevitably encounter “The Wilderness.” We feel stuck, weighed down, insecure about the season that we’re in.  In this episode, Tyler and Jemar talk about what it means to walk through the wilderness. They discuss shame, learning and unlearning, patterns of growth, and some perspective about what’s happening in this season of our lives. If you’re in the wilderness, please know you are not alone. Many are walking through the same thing you are.  ******************************** What is #LeaveLOUD? In 2018, the New York Times published an article tiled: A Quiet Exodus: Why Black Worshipers Are Leaving White Evangelical Churches that chronicled the plight of Black Christians who quietly exited their churches after their pastors and fellow believers failed to denounce state-sanctioned violence against Black people, white Christian Nationalism, systemic racism, and everyday bigotry. Since that time, things have gotten worse, not better. In recent months, we’ve seen a surge of Black leaders and congregants in predominantly white or multiethnic churches and Christian spaces decide that it’s time for them to go. We bear witness to the hurt, harm, and frustration that our siblings have experienced. Enough is enough. It’s time to #LeaveLOUD To #LeaveLOUD is to tell our stories, to name things for what they are, to take back the dignity we’ve lost while being in institutions that don’t value the fullness of the image of God within us, and to go where we are celebrated and not just tolerated. For the next several weeks, we will be sharing stories of Black Christians who have made the decision to #LeaveLOUD. We will also be providing thoughtful analysis, words of wisdom, and resources for those who have already left or who are discerning whether they should #LeaveLOUD. We invite you to share your stories using the hashtag #LeaveLOUD. The Witness BCC exists to empower Black Christians to live into the fullness of who God created us to be. You are not alone. 2:32.4

And one of the questions, and I shouldn't even say one of because we know it's the number one. The number one question that we get every single time someone talks to us about leave loud is what's next.

2:46.4

And when we were mapping out this whole movement and this journey based upon our journeys, because that's really so much of what it is.

2:55.4

We were talking about this in the context of what happens after we leave some of us left quietly others of us left loud, but after we leave what happens because we don't step into a place that is automatically equitable and just for flourishing.

3:11.4

But there's this interim period and this interim period is what we like to call the wilderness. And we're obviously not the first to coin that term is all throughout the scriptures, all throughout the biblical narrative of people, great women and men that God has used going through their wilderness period, their wilderness season.

3:31.4

Jamar, for me, I think it was the first time that I really that I realized I was in the wilderness. It wasn't necessarily in the wilderness situationally because I was leading in a black church and I was a part of a faith family and I have people that have my back.

3:49.4

But it was in my relationships publicly. And when I started talking about Mike Brown in 2014 on my Facebook wall, I remember all the backlash that I got all the private conversations that I had.

4:02.4

And there was this exhilaration not because of the conversations, but because what I felt like I was doing in me was clarifying my calling and my purpose. And I felt liberated.

4:15.4

But I was liberated and also lonely.
