Summary

On a recent episode of the Diary of a CEO podcast, Russell Brand said: 'You can't be a father to anyone until you can be a father to yourself'. And it struck us that this is true of all parents.

(We understand that plugging another podcast in the notes of your own podcast isn't smart business talk but its all for the greater cause!)

One of the things that a lot of us had in common during our drinking days is that we didn't take particularly good care of ourselves. We abused our bodies, were promiscuous, experimented with party drugs and generally treated our bodies with disdain. In short, we parented ourselves poorly.

Whether you have ambitions to a parent or not - all of us have experienced what it is like to be parented. For good or for bad. Whether it was your biological parents or someone who played the role in their place.

If you do go on to become a parent you probably hope to pass on the good bits and swerve the bad.

In this week's episode, Hame and Vic share the traits of theirs they hate the most and are scared of passing on. And share the lessons they have learnt from their past. Most importantly, they discuss the role sobriety has played in improving them as parents and emphasise the importance of not aiming to be the 'perfect' parent!

However, much of your children's lives you spent drinking or drunk - it is never too late to turn things around and inspire.
