In Adam Smith's Magnum Opus, the Wealth of Nations, Smith describes the benefits of breaking

a large task into smaller components, then assigning one person to each specific task,

encouraging them to specialize in performing it.

He uses the example of the pen factory.

Smith suggests that having one person make every part of the pen would result in low-productive

output.

Instead, he suggests a division of labor.

He suggested, quote, one person draws out the wire, another straightens it, a third cuts

it, a fourth points it, a fifth grinds it at the top for receiving the head.

In quote, from the perspective of the factory owner in the age of the industrial revolution,

this approach of breaking complex tasks into simple specialized and repetitive tasks yielded

a lot of efficiency gains.

But from the worker's point of view, they were dehumanized into just flesh-covered robots

or machines.

Nothing more than cogs in the industrial wheel.

They were putting in just time for money, without any sense of even how their little

individual task fit into the larger picture.

No sense of purpose, no creative contribution, no personal meaning or personal satisfaction.

It's astonishing how some ideas, some assumptions, and practices endure, even when it is obvious
