Today our discussion starts on a question that came from the website.

This is actually, I will admit the second time we're recording this

because I forgot to hit the record button the first time.

So...

It was rubbish anyway.

So here we go. We've been asked how best a student or a cinematographer starting out can learn the basics of lighting.

I think it's a difficult question, isn't it?

Because what is your first reaction to that question is,

okay, technically, how do you learn to light and then you think about

traditional lighting and I think a lot of people still look at lighting in this way

which was front light, key light, back light, fill light, kicker light, you know. But that's not really, that's not really the essence of lighting.

That's the way of creating an image that you have in your head.

So it's the image that you have in your head. So it's the image that you have in your head that's more

important than the technique if that makes sense. So I think the only way you

really learn lighting is by experiencing light. you really
