Hello and welcome to Who Killed. I am your host, Bill Huffman. On this week's episode, we're going to go back to late October of 1994 in the city of Hartford, Connecticut, and the tragic death of Leah Albrecht. I will warn you up front, the case is very graphic, and I'm going to do my best to keep the gory details to a minimum. So once you hear how she was killed, I'll do my best to leave it there.

And while Leah had a family, her case still remains unsolved.

And it's also one of those cases that over the last few weeks I've covered

0:56.8

where people kind of fall by the wayside. And on October 29th, 1994, Leah's life seemed to be on the upswing.

that let her become sober.

1:39.3

And unfortunately, this is more of an outlier than the norm,

1:42.8

because if you are uninsured or don't have money, you are more than likely to try to kick your fix in jail instead of rehab.

1:52.3

The importance of being able to offer these types of services to low-income people, I believe is vital to any addict, but more importantly to society.

2:02.1

I mean, you live in a vicious circle if people get locked up and aren't rehabilitated

2:08.2

and then released with no new additional education on how to not relapse.

2:12.9

Well, that is pretty much a recipe for disaster.

2:17.3

I mean, we can tell by the fact that the recidivism

2:20.5

rates in the United States are out of control. And as taxpayers, we are the ones who pay for

2:27.2

this stupid-ass program. It's like putting a Band-Aid on an axe wound and expecting it to heal.
