Ladies and gentlemen, the United States was

inarguably more powerful militarily

than the North Vietnamese government.

The results of that war, as you probably know by now, is that the United States walked away, tailed between its legs, and the North Vietnamese government took control of the entire country.

The United States was infinitely more powerful than the Taliban.

And after 20 years of fighting there, the Taliban are in charge.

This is not to put down the United States of America.

It's just to point out that wars have strange endings sometimes.

You can be in the driver's seat, have the vast majority of military power at your disposal,

and still wind up with the government worse than the one you try to overthrow.

In 1952, the United States and Great Britain overthrew a democratically elected government in Iran.

The United States part of that operation was called Operation Ajax because Operation Tide had already been taken.

That operation empowered the Shah of Iran to take over with a ruthless secret police force called Savak.

That's what our operation there gave the Iranian people.

The Shah's regime lasted 26 years.

It was overthrown by a religious, theocratically oriented outfit.

Its reign has lasted for 27 years.
