So welcome to our Rosary meditation.

Let's begin in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen. Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

Now, one of the strangest things that you hear today

especially related to abortion is that we shouldn't legislate morality or that our laws shouldn't impose morality.

People who say that though I don't think they've thought about what the law is or why we have civil laws in the first place.

And they probably haven't thought about what morality is either.

Now it's going to take some effort. We're going to have to think. But morality is just our

insights about what good about what's good for people.

Morality is just our insight about what's good for people and what's bad for people.

For instance, our moral insight tells us that murder and bigotry and treating others as a

sexual object and sickness and hate, these are not good things.

And that cooperation and friendship and family and cultural

enrichment are good things. And then civil law is just our strategy as a society for doing our best to reasonably limit bad things like hate

or murder or bigotry or needless tragedy and to reasonably promote good things like employment and safety and

transportation and health. So for instance take our highways. It's a basic moral insight that mobility and transportation, being able to visit and trade with people from far away,

is something that's generally good for people.

So all advanced societies have laws about how to build and maintain roads.

And it's also a basic moral insight that deaths from car crashes are bad for people.

So we also have traffic safety. from car crashes are bad for people.

So we also have traffic safety laws and seatbelt laws.
