From lowest to highest a guitar strings go EADG-D-G-B-E.

That's called standard tuning, and if you change at least one of those strings,

you get what's called an alternative tuning.

One of my favorite alternative tunings goes D-A-D-G-A-D because people sometimes call it Dad-G-G-A-D.

Then again, as a sax player, I play with alternative tuning all the time.

I just have to not warm up enough. And the Welcome to Strong Songs a podcast about music. I'm your host Kirk Hamilton and as always I am so glad that you

Guitar tunings are a whole cool world that you can start to get into the better you get at guitar and the more kinds of guitar sounds you want to get. And it's a kind of a cool thing to keep in mind when you're watching somebody play

guitar the more familiar you are with the instrument the more you can kind of tell

what a given guitar player might be doing on stage you You know, maybe she's playing in drop D,

maybe he's playing in Dad,

you can see sometimes a guitar player will just notice

that one of their strings is out of tune

and they'll be, you know, tuning up in between songs.

You can see them looking down at their

tuner on the on the floor in front of them and sort of messing with the

tuning peg but sometimes they're retuning the guitar entirely and if they're a big

act usually they have a whole bunch of guitars you know that's when you're a big act, usually they have a whole bunch of guitars.

You know, that's when you're a big enough act.
