Summary

Kim Masters talks to writer & director Larry Charles about his new memoir Comedy Samurai. He shares stories about writing for Seinfeld, directing Curb Your Enthusiasm, and his chaotic experiences working with Sacha Baron Cohen on Borat and Bruno. Charles also tells the story of an early morning call from Ari Emanuel that pulled the plug on his Larry David documentary the day before its HBO premiere.

Also, it’s official: Paramount has settled with Donald Trump over a long-disputed 60 Minutes segment. The company agreed to pay $16 million, a move that could clear the path for David Ellison’s long-anticipated Skydance merger. Kim Masters and Matt Belloni break down what this means for Paramount’s future… and what an Ellison-led studio might look like.

In his memoir, Comedy Samurai, he also recalls directing Sasha Baron Cohen in both Borat and Bruno, and he doesn't mince words.

I think he had always been like a control freak, but was able to sublimate it, and then

0:25.4

slowly as success came along, he started to assert more control over things without really

having a strong idea of what he wanted.

That created kind of chaos in the process of making the movies.

We've talked about this ad nauseum, and I mean that literally. So there was no apology, which is a big sticking point. People at CBS News and

probably elsewhere, nonetheless, are very unhappy. I just want to step back and say, I'm thinking

1:34.7

at this moment about Bob Iger, because Bob Iger settled that lawsuit against George Stephanopoulos,

1:42.6

arguably quite winnable lawsuit for $16 million,

1:46.2

as you know. And it turns out that set a precedent here because the other media companies

1:52.2

then started to pay up. And, you know, Disney may argue, and I think Bob Iger does argue,

1:59.0

that one of the reasons for settling was because if this turned

into a lawsuit that went before the Supreme Court, it could overturn precedence. The Sullivan case,

what this Supreme Court majority will say on any subject because they've been very
