The U.S. job front is not looking good.

New data out today shows the labor market saw a recession-level layoff spike last month,

which includes the massive Trump administration-led cuts.

In February, U.S.-based employers announced plans to cut more than 172,000 jobs. This is 103% jump from numbers in the same period last year.

And it's also the highest February total since 2009.

According to the outplacement firm, Challenger Gray and Christmas, the hardest hit sector

was in the government, where over 62,000 jobs were slashed as part of a

cost-saving strategy from the Department of Government Efficiency, or Doge, which also cut federal

spending and contracts. And the Doge effect was not limited to the public sector. Retail, technology,

and consumer products also felt the burn. CNN's Alicia Wallace has more.
