Summary

We're joined by the co-founder of Wild Health, a site that offers personalized healthcare involving blood and genetic testing to determine your best diet. I have some concerns over relying on genetic reporting to fuel our health choices and talk openly about this in the episode. We're chatting about figuring out your diet and how the genome is involved in this, blood work and what role it plays in the diet, understanding MTHFR, and epigenetics.

Hello, my friend. It's episode 402 of the keto diet podcast. My name is Leanne Vogel.

0:05.7

I'm so excited to have you here. If you want to catch up with me, pass this episode.

0:10.2

Head on over to healthfullpersuute.com where we can find articles and resources and guides and so, so, so much more over there.

0:18.9

Today we're talking about DNA and this is something that I go back and forth on.

0:23.8

I am not convinced that getting a genetic report is the be all and all of your health.

0:29.0

I'm pretty convinced of this, but what I love about hosting a podcast is understanding that there are so many different types of people that listen to the show.

0:38.4

And by having a simple resource or even just a conversation about this resource, you can make a better informed decision about what you need and the answers that might be missing in your own health.

0:48.8

Now, we had a conversation about genetics, just like a basic conversation. I prepared an episode, episode 319, where I just shared my understanding of what DNA is all about and what these genetic reports can tell us.

1:03.5

Then further along, episode 368, we had a guest on chat with us about nutrigenomics, basically the idea that nutrition and the choices we make with our food can change how our DNA expresses itself.

1:16.9

And I would definitely see that in my own life. You know, I've shared this in our my personal health journey series, which I started in 2022, all about the journey that I'd been through from having an eating disorder to discovering keto, to having to go off keto because of chronic illnesses.

1:34.7

And then going back on keto, I'm preparing an episode here that'll go live in a couple of weeks on my experience with H. Pylori, spoiler alert, it wasn't fun.

1:45.1

So I do, I have seen in my personal life that nutrition changes can alter the course of your life. Like, I see that in my practice, I see that with my clients all the time.

1:56.0

But is DNA reporting, is genetic reporting the only way to move about this? No, just like I don't feel like blood work is the only way, just like I feel like a GI map, which is a stool test is the only way there are so many different data points in addition to your own experience with your body.

2:13.4

And so that's why I loved to have conversations with people that I might not agree with 100%. Our guest today was very open to my skepticism. I told his team before we booked the episode that, I don't know how I feel about this.

2:27.6

I'm not sure, but okay, so our guest today is Mike Malin. He's a the co-founder and chief science officer behind wildhealth.com.

2:37.3

And basically, well, wildhealth.com does, and I'm not paid to say this whatsoever. I'm just laying the groundwork so you can make the decision of whether or not something like this would be beneficial or just understanding that there's something like this out there.

2:50.4

So my understanding is what they do is they personalize a program for you using genetics, blood work, diet, nutrition, exercise, and recovery.

3:01.9

What kind of blood work they run? I have no idea. I asked multiple times just like what that looks like, and I didn't get a clear answer.

3:09.7

So I don't know what that looks like. I know that once you have your report, you get a visit with a physician about what your report is saying, hang up that I had, and I did bring it up in the interview.

3:22.7

And I'll just highlight it up here up front. It's that they do use thorn products in their recommendations. And I have a pretty huge issue with thorn.

3:32.1

Last year, thorn as a supplement company decided to lay off. I don't even know if they laid off or fired. I'm not sure you can look it up.

3:40.4

They're employees who chose not to get vaccinated. And so as a practitioner, I removed thorn from my platform and just didn't want to associate with them.
