Once it would have seemed obvious that car owners had a right to

repair their own cars. Now I'm not so sure. As software has proliferated in

cars as the number of lines of code has grown into the millions.

Automakers and other manufacturers are arguing that these devices are too complicated for your

ordinary gearhead to fix.

They say safety and cybersecurity concerns arise when third parties access their

software, emphasis on their software, because now they're arguing that they own the copyright to that

software and federal law forbids car enthusiasts and that they own the copyright to that software,

and federal law forbids car enthusiasts

and independent repair shops alike

from modifying vehicles.

My guest today is Kyle Weens.

He's the co-founder and CEO of I Fix It, an online repair community.

Kyle has spent the past decade fighting for consumers' right to repair their own cars in other devices.

Today he's going to fill us in on the legal landscape surrounding this issue.
