Summary

In this week’s Flightless Bird, David looks back at Invisible Children’s “Kony 2012” documentary through the eyes of Lilly, an intern at the time - and Jedidiah Jenkins, the director of idea development for Invisible Children in 2012. Lilly and Jed take David inside the viral hit - the first ever video to reach 1 million likes on YouTube, the speediest ever to reach 100 million views. A Pew Research poll at the time indicated more than half of young adult Americans had heard about Kony 2012 in the days following its release. The purpose of Kony 2012 was to make Warlord Joseph Kony “famous”, and raise money for Invisible Children’s cause. And then everything went wrong.Contact David and Rob: flightlessbirdchat@gmail.com FB Merch: www.flightlessbirdpod.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

But maybe Whippersnapper is also like something a crotchety old drunk would call like a someone's

skateboarding past.

0:32.3

And in many ways, that does echo our dynamic, I'd say.

0:35.3

The reason I'm calling you today is to inquire whether you remember anything about a movement

0:41.0

called Coney 2012.

0:44.2

I do.

0:45.6

Yep.

0:46.5

Of course I remember Coney.

0:47.8

Yep.

0:48.2

So this was an incredibly American movement that obviously hit New Zealand.

0:53.6

What are your memories of it?

0:55.7

Like what comes to the surface, the quickest? This is actually a super embarrassing topic for me,

1:01.4

because you were immediately skeptical of Coney 2012 in a way that probably does credit to you.

1:08.8

And I feel like I got way more suck at it.
