Summary

With their backs against the wall, the Knicks responded in a crucial Game 4, quieting the noise and shifting momentum in the series. Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber break down how the pressure on Mike Brown reached a boiling point and how his long awaited adjustments helped New York even things up heading back to Madison Square Garden. They dive into the decision to run the offense through Karl-Anthony Towns, the reduced role for Mikal Bridges, and whether those changes came too late to fully trust the coaching. The discussion also explores Bridges’ uncertain impact moving forward, the importance of keeping him engaged, and why the Knicks may suddenly have the edge despite inconsistencies and a heavy reliance on outside shooting.

Mike Brown and the Knicks were facing so much heat going into Saturday night's game.

0:04.1

It almost felt as if many thought the series was over.

0:08.4

And obviously it's not.

0:09.7

There's still the better team down to one.

Obviously, game four was an incredibly important game to even it up and take it back to Madison Square Garden.

But between the out of context, Mike Brown line when he said, I can't say we're going to come back and win this series, which is not what he said. The comment was OKC was down last year and they won an NBA championship. I can't tell you we're going to do that, which he shouldn't even utter. I think as a head coach, you should never not promise something. You shouldn't promise it necessarily, but you shouldn't say, yeah, I don't know if we're going to do that. So I think sometimes things come out clunky. But Mike Brown was also facing a lot of heat based on what changes are you going to make going into game four? And he kept the starting lineup very close to the vest. Like, wouldn't tell anybody. And that starting line was just been mediocre. Yeah, and it made sense to make a change.

0:55.7

Yeah.

0:55.9

Whether it was sitting McKell Bridges or something else we're not thinking of.

0:59.4

He decides to not make any changes to the starting five, but again, kept it very close to himself until right before tip off.

And the two changes that we saw, and they both worked out beautifully in game four, was number one, the offense essentially running through Carl Anthony Town and number two. Surprise, that's what your advantage was. Oh, what a shocker. And it worked. And it worked on both ends. I mean, Kat was an incredible passer in this game. How many times did he find a cutting OG to the basket? He made his shots. Like, Jaylen Brunson wasn't even great in this game shooting the basketball, but they overcame it.

1:30.4

And then the other adjustment he made is that he embarrassed Mikhail Bridges.

1:34.3

Because after benching him a day before in the fourth quarter, in this game, he lets him play about 14 minutes in the first half.

1:42.4

It's a little bit below his average.

1:46.8

Plays the first four minutes of the third quarter.

1:48.8

And then he disappears.

1:51.8

And you can't even complain about it.

1:52.4

How can you?

1:54.0

Because Deuce was better.

1:55.6

Jordan Clarkson was better. And their lineups are more capable, scoring-wise, when he's not on the court.

2:02.6

And it's unfortunate because Michael Bridges came here and he was supposed to be this fantastic 3-and-D guy, a long wing,

2:10.9

could be a difference maker on both ends of the court.

2:14.4

But somewhere along the way, we've been talking about this all regular season,
