Once upon a time, centuries ago, there lived a king who was called Alfred. He was one of the greatest

kings England had ever had. Wise and just, he fought for his people and his land. The Danes, who you

might know as Vikings,

were invading England.

They came by sea, and they were fierce.

King Alfred's army broke apart,

and the soldiers were forced to flee.

And so too was King Alfred.

He disguised himself as a shepherd

and trudged through the swamps

until he finally reached a forest.

After days of wandering through the trees

he came upon a small cottage

which belonged to a woodcutter and his wife.

Something was cooking inside and the smell carried through the air.
