Summary

These days it feels like kids come out of the womb glued to a screen. The term “iPad Kid” has been coined on TikTok – ironically another addictive piece of technology – to describe toddlers who seem to always have a tablet in tow. Even with kids’ programming and parental controls, it still feels nearly impossible to shield children from the challenges of the internet. Devorah Heitner tackles this subject in her latest book, Growing up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World. 1:05.2	but most people seem to agree that the way kids use the Internet plays a big role.
1:09.9	Consider Surgeon General Vivek Murthy's proclamation last spring.
1:13.7	We're in the middle of a youth mental health crisis in America.
1:17.8	I've said before that this is the defining public health challenge of our time.
1:22.3	And I'm very concerned that social media has become an important contributor to the pain
1:27.2	and the struggles that many of our young people are facing.
1:31.0	Dr. Murthy went so far as to issue an advisory on social media and youth mental health.
1:36.6	Now you know me, I'm a techno optimist.
