Our topic is the role and risks to whistleblowers.

And I didn't know at the time that today is international whistleblowers day.

That seems fortuitous.

If we hope to uncover and punish or deter corruption, we need to support whistleblowers

and we need to support journalists, two key communities.

And our first panel reflects the overlap of those two communities.

And Khadija, Ismailovo, will speak first. She's an investigative journal

from, and now in, Azerbaijan. She was targeted by her government, relentlessly,

and I'm very pleased and proud to say unsuccessfully, in an attempt to dissuade her from

investigating corruption there.

You could just for people who don't know it, you tell it well and it's a compelling story,

just talk us through your story as a whistleblower and a journalist.

I'm more on the receiving of the whistleblowers service to the world. I'm a

journalist who speaks to whistleblowers frequently and sometimes they find me, sometimes I speak to

people and then they decide to come out and speak out.

Just today I interviewed a woman who is speaking out and reaping the truth about police officers

who killed the businessman in one of the regions in Azerbaijan.

She's hiding now. It's incredibly difficult for her.

People question her motives.

People question her participation in that crime.

But I think it's incredibly brave of her to come out and speak out.
