This is CBS. I on the world. I'm John Batchel. It is September 19, 77. Jimmy Carter is in the White House,

and the country is in despair. OPEC and the world-scale civil war, and the wars in the Middle East,

and a president who is exceedingly scrupulous, but at the same time

does not hear the steelworkers of America.

I go to that place thanks to Selena Zito of the Washington Examiner and the Wall Street

Journal and her new book, Butler, the untold story of the near assassination of Donald Trump

and the fight for America's heartland.

That happens in 2024, but we're going to start in 77, because John Glenn, the Ohio senator and hero of the Apollo program, was with a petition to the Carter administration to pay attention to steel, imported steel that was washing away the U.S. steel industry.

Why did the Carter people not listen?

Good evening. You know, we don't know. And before there were several of his close staffers I spoke to years before,

and they have now since passed, who still could not understand why Carter would not meet with these steel

workers who came down to to DC. They came with Senator John Glenn, a Democrat, also members

of the faith community, the Democratic Union, the Democrats, the union. they all traveled down and they were supposed to

meet with him with a petition that was signed by over 100,000 people to stop the tariffs and

and, you know, give these men and women a level playing field and they got to the

White House there was this big beautiful sort of event with all these people coming from

Pittsburgh and Youngstown and you know they're all standing in front of the White House and

he won't meet with them.
