Summary

Alan is a little obsessed with chatbots, and he’s become only too aware that these products of artificial intelligence can become seriously – even dangerously – stupid. What’s urgently needed, argues tech guru Kevin Kelly, are people with a particular talent – the ability to coax chatbots into being useful – AI whisperers.

I'm Alan Olga and this is Clear In Vivid. Conversations about connecting and communicating.

I call it AI Whisper. There are some people who can whisper to the AI and have it produce

0:23.0

what they want. And you and I, when we go there, you'll put in something to GPT-3 and

0:28.5

it'll be okay, but it's not going to be like super great to get something outside of

0:33.2

that pattern completely. It's very difficult to do and this is one of the reasons why I don't

0:37.8

think humans are going to lose their jobs is that if you see some of the people who are

0:42.5

making some of the best stuff that GPT-3, it takes a thousand hours.

That's Kevin Kelly. He's been an astute observer of the tech scene since he co-founded the

0:54.1

first online community back in the 1980s. So we turned to him to help me understand the sudden

obsession that many people have with chatbots and I include myself among the obsessed.

1:07.2

Chatbots are those eerily realistic conversation partners that are generated by artificial

1:12.8

intelligence. How do they do it and should we be excited about their potential or scared?

1:20.2

This is really going to be interesting to me because like millions of others around the world,

1:25.4

I've been absorbed in the new chatbot chat GPT. It's addictive because you don't know how it could

1:34.2

possibly be giving you conversational answers so quickly. Within seconds, how does it do that?

1:42.2

It's mostly pattern recognition. It's studied, been trained on, millions of other bits of writing

1:53.0

the humans have done and so when it's asked to do something, it's giving a pattern around a certain

2:00.7

set of information or facts. It's sort of like someone who's really, really good at ad living

2:08.3

things that they don't and talking about things that they really don't understand. You can kind

2:12.6

of nod your head. It's very akin to that so it doesn't really understand what it's saying,

2:20.0

but it's so good at mimicking the patterns that is good enough. This is crushing. I've been a chat

2:27.2

bot all my life. You have and some people are better at it than others. You know, we're all curious
