Summary

Musician Kevin Abstract (founding member of BROCKHAMPTON) joins us today! With the release of “Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine,” we unpack how Kevin and the group arrived at this new record. Under the comfort of his sunglasses, Kevin talks about falling back in love with music during the pandemic (5:25), despite struggling with success (8:50) and self-acceptance (12:13). He also discusses the radical act of speaking his truth on Papercut (14:15), the power of representation (17:56), and the music video that jump-started BROCKHAMPTON’s ascendency (21:30). Then, before we go, Kevin speaks openly about the mounting pressures to perform (25:48), the joys of collaborating with Dominic Fike on Peach (29:54), the healing nature of “Roadrunner” (36:07), and where he hopes the group goes from here (40:34).

They have a new record out called Roadrunner New Light New Machine,

which you can find wherever you listen to your music.

But before we get into the episode,

I want to take a moment with yesterday's news.

1:10.0

As you saw, Derek Chauvin was charged for the murder of George Floyd

1:15.3

he was found guilty on all three counts and

1:19.2

will hopefully be spending the rest of his years in prison.

1:24.3

I watched the verdict on television, perhaps like many of you.

1:29.2

As the guilty charges came in and the judge confirmed the conviction with each juror. I felt anxious

1:37.4

and tense. Even after Chauvin was carded away, I felt very little relief and maybe that's because there's no real

1:46.5

relief to be had here and there never was supposed to be. What happened to George Floyd on May 25th of 2020 is not

1:56.9

something we get to move past. Those nine minutes and 29 seconds will forever live on through you and I both. But you don't

2:07.0

get to move past tragedy. You move with it. Each day, one foot in front of the other, you learn to live with it.

2:17.0

Despite some of the proclamations you may have heard yesterday, George Floyd did not sacrifice his life for justice. He did not

2:27.4

offer himself as tribute for us, for the cause. This is something I think white people like to say, and it is maybe well

2:36.8

intentioned, but it's also wrong-headed. George Floyd had no choice in the matter. He did not decide to become a symbol for a movement

2:47.0

or a name yelled in the streets during protests. Yesterday, the mayor of Minneapolis Jacob Frey said,

George Floyd came to Minneapolis to better his life,
