Summary

This podcast episode is all about the brain because the guest is master clinician, certified neuropsychiatrist, and brain scientist, Dr. David Feifel.

Feifel founded the Kadima Neuropsychiatry Institute in San Diego after having been a professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego for more than 20 years. Nearly a decade ago, he developed the world's first ketamine infusion program for psychiatric disorders and integrated that practice into the UCSD's Center for Advanced Treatments.

In this episode, we talk about how the brain actually works, using ketamine in psychiatry, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and much more.

You wanted more brain hackers, you got more brain hackers. Enjoy the show!

Today's cool fact of the day is about the numbers in your brain.

0:21.0

Specifically, it weighs about 3.3 pounds.

0:24.4

It's about 60% fat, which means it's one of your fattiest organs.

0:28.9

Especially if you're a woman, probably not the fattiest organ.

0:32.1

But you probably didn't know there are 100,000 miles of blood vessels in your brain,

0:37.0

but four times around the equator of the earth, which is kind of cool.

0:41.5

And you've got billions of nerve fibers called axons and dendrites,

0:45.4

which you've heard me talk about before.

0:47.2

But did you know there's about 100 billion neurons in your brain,

0:50.5

but they're only about 10% of the brain.

0:53.2

And they have that power because they reach out to 100 trillion plus trigger points,

0:58.5

which is what you could call a neuron forest.

1:01.2

And your brain can make about 23 watts of power when you're awake,

1:05.4

which is not quite enough to charge your iPhone,

1:08.2

but you maybe could if you weren't thinking.

1:10.8

And your brain process information at somewhere around one mile per hour,

1:16.6

up to 268 miles an hour.

1:20.5

And what that means is they're actually measuring how fast electrons fall in the brain,

1:24.0

which is kind of cool.

1:24.8

So you can think both fast and slow.

1:28.4

As the title of a famous book would tell you.
