Bethlehem Baptist Church on March 2nd 1986 we're working through the high priestly prayer as it's sometimes called the prayer that Jesus prayed in the upper room, the Gospel of John, that last night of his life on earth before his crucifixion. Jesus is praying,

I have given to them, that is, to his disciples whom the Father has given him out of the world,

I have given to them your word, your is his Father in heaven.

And the world hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

in the world so he's not just abandoning them as it, and that creates a problem that needs to be solved through prayer, but he's abandoning them to a hostile world of wolves to use his words in another place. Of course, we know he's not really abandoning them because the Father is going to answer this prayer through the Holy Spirit.

But that's the problem that's being faced here. The world hated them because they are not of the world just as I and not of the world.

So let's think for a few moments about this hate that the world according to this text has for the followers of Jesus. Why? Why does the world hate the followers of Jesus?
