Okay, we're talking about chickens today and mini livestock.

The only one I have direct experience with is chickens. So that's the one I'm going to focus on but

there's some material in the book about keeping ducks, quail, and bees written with the help of some of my

friends who have more experience growing and

cultivating those types of livestock. So let's talk about chickens first. The thing

that you have to know about chickens is to me in a homestead they are

probably the ultimate animal from the perspective of like you get eggs you get

protein you get garden benefits they're going to come through

scratch up the dirt leave their droppings in the dirt eat pests all that sort of

good stuff you have recyclers you can actually throw your garden waste in there you can throw your

food scraps in there from the kitchen they'll eat that and you have companionship

and you have sort of the beauty of life being cultivated around you you can also

get the experience of raising them from baby chicks which is

highly highly rewarding. Now what I will say is you also have the downside of that.

We've lost one of my 10 hens. We lost Gucci sometime around May of last year. It was an egg-bound

situation that we weren't able to detect in time and she unfortunately passed away and that's shocking.

I mean when you see that especially for the first time it really really hits you hard and you

know it was a tough day and wanted to do her honor so I buried her in the garden and recycled her body into the garden.
