Hi there from CNN. I'm Charlie Dreeva with the five things you need to know for Friday, August 29th.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

And now former FEMA leaders are warning that lessons from the disaster are being forgotten

under the Trump administration.

A bungled local, state and federal response to the hurricane contributed to nearly 1,400 deaths,

mainly in New Orleans, and led to an overhaul of FEMA.

But now President Donald Trump is vowing to dismantle the agency and shift the burden of disaster response to states to improve efficiency.

CNN spoke to five former heads of FEMA from every

administration since Katrina, who were all concerned about the recent changes. And those worries

were echoed by former FEMA press secretary Jeremy Edwards. That disaster, that catastrophe,

taught us some very hard-fought lessons. Number one is that you need someone who's an expert to lead the agency.

Number two is that FEMA needs a flexibility to do its job to get resources and people pre-position in a timely manner.

And number three is that FEMA needs to be able to help state and local officials prepare for disasters.

And under this administration, they've gotten an F grade on each one of those hard-fought lessons
