Summary

We meet curator Kate Bryan and artist David Shrigley to explore their new book How To Art. Recorded live in London, in front of a sold out audience.

What is art, where do I find it, and once I’m in front of it, what am I supposed to think about it? Kate Bryan is a self-confessed art addict who has worked with art for over twenty years. But before she studied art history at university, she’d visited a gallery just twice in her life and had no idea she was entering an elitist world. Now, she’s on a mission to help everybody come to art.

Like playing or listening to music, or cooking and eating great food, reading or watching films, making art or looking at other people’s deserves to be an enriching part of all our lives. How to Art provides a nifty way to ingest art on your own terms.

From where it is to what it is, to tips on how to actually enjoy famous artworks like the Mona Lisa, to how to own art and make art at home, to vital advice for making a career as an artist and even how to make your dog more cultural, How to Art gives art to everyone—and makes it fun. Laced throughout with original artworks by the very down-to-earth artist David Shrigley.

How are you feeling today, Robert?

0:28.0

Today, Russell, I am feeling fancy.

0:31.5

Oh, that's a nice feeling.

0:33.0

Yeah, very fancy. But I'm fancy and down to earth, which is very handy because the book we are here

0:39.7

to discuss today has been described as bringing a fancy subject down to earth so that we can all

0:46.2

enjoy it. So the book in question is called How to Art. And it has an incredible illustration

0:53.1

painting on the front cover with an all-seeing eye.

0:56.3

And I actually think of the person who wrote this book as a kind of all-seeing eye in terms of

1:01.9

the art world, because she has been so generous and supportive to so many different artists of

1:06.6

all generations. She brings together lots of new audiences to art through her work in the TV world.

1:13.6

And the book is illustrated with unique paintings by the one and only British artist David Shrigley.

1:21.1

And he's also here today. And David is someone that I've worked a lot with over the years in

1:24.9

Countereditions, the print publishing house in Margate, where I'm partner. And I also think he connects so many people with art in a way that other

1:34.4

artists haven't really been able to do. I think he's really reached out to a huge audience of people

1:39.8

that might not have even realized they would love art, but now they do because of his humor and

1:45.1

also his amazing line and also his very inventive sculptures and installations.

1:50.7

And he's done a lot with education, which we can talk about as well.

1:53.5

But I would now like to welcome both of them to the show.
