Summary

The rapper Ye - formerly known as Kanye West - has been blocked from headlining a festival in London this summer over anti-semitic behaviour. Can we separate the art from the artist?

We also discuss the cumulative impact of doctors' strikes, and ask why politics - and society - can't get over its obsession with the nineties and noughties.

Hugo Rifkind unpacks the politics of the day with Charlotte Ivers and James Marriott.

Hello, I'm Hugo Rifkin, and now we're going to be unpacking the politics of the day

from whether Kanye West should be able to come to the UK to headline a festival

0:12.1

to why I was so relentlessly nostalgic for the 90s and the naughties.

0:16.3

And joining me are two Times journalists who were a lot younger in the 90s and the naughties than I was.

0:21.1

And they are James Marriott. Hello, James. Good morning. How are you?

0:25.1

Nostalgia for the 90s and naughties. Yes, understood. I don't know about doing all right. And Charlotte Ivers. Charlotte, how are you? Hello, Hugo. Are you as nostalgic as James is? Not really, no. I think in the 90s and noughties I was a child and I think it's much better to be an adult than a child. There's a lot of doing stuff you don't want to do when you're a child. Gosh, they were wild. We'll come back to that in a minute. Let's begin with the rapper. I think yay, but possibly ye. Who knows? Formerly known as Kanye West, Ministers are looking into whether he should be allowed to the UK to headline London's Wireless Festival in July, given his track record of anti-semitic comments.

To remind you, this time a year ago, West released a song called Heil Hitler, which sampled his speech by Hitler and praised the Nazi leader. He's also engaged in Holocaust denial. He sold t-shirts bearing swastikas. He's made other offensive statements as well. He has said his only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace and love through my music. He's apologised for being anti-Semitic and asked for the opportunity to meet with the Jewish community in the UK. And he's blamed bipolar for his behaviour. Um, I think I'm probably, am I the only person here who has actually seen Kanye West? I have. I saw Kanye West from my mother when I was about 10 years old. Gosh. Yeah. Well, any good? It was fantastic. There were like 200 ballerinas. He did a cool thing where you thought he had appeared in the sound tower and then suddenly he popped up on stage. Yeah, it's magical. And this I would would like to say, was in the pre-Nazi era.

1:45.9

Yeah, so I saw him at Glastonbury in, I think, probably 2015 or 14, whenever he was, he was

1:50.4

there. And that was, he was already mad by then, I would say.

1:53.0

Interesting, okay. His stage set was just him and loads of lights.

1:57.4

But look, turning to the matter at hand.

2:03.6

James, why is this even a question?

2:06.7

I mean, it's like we don't... Sometimes when there are allegations of anti-Semitism,

2:08.8

you need to analyse them,

2:09.7

go precisely what's being said,

2:10.9

are people right to take offence?

2:12.7

Heil Hitler, he said in a song.

2:15.1

Right?

2:15.9

Yeah, it seems...

2:16.8

I mean, it does seem pretty open and shut. I guess

2:19.1

the only sort of special pleading that is made for Kanye is that he does seem to have bipolar

2:26.1

disorder. And I know there's a strain of defence that runs, we all expect mental health to look
