and my guest today is one of Hollywood's brightest young stars,

a 23-year-old who has quietly been doing outstanding work for over a decade on both the small screen,

on TV series like FX is Justified, and Foxes, formerly ABC's Last Man Standing, and on the big screen in films like Destin Daniel Credden's

short-term 12, Jason Reitman's men, women, and children, and Catherine Bigelow's Detroit.

But who, over the past year, took things to a whole other level as a co-lead scene of the film

Book Smart, Olivia Wilde's feature directorial debut and an instant comedy classic.

And as the lead of the Netflix limited series, unbelievable, a rip from the headline show created

by Susanna Grant, Iolent Waldman, and Michael Shebon, that was watched by 32 million people in its first month on the streaming service.

Both of her projects were included on Barack Obama's list of personal favorites of 2019.

The former landed her a BAFTA Award nomination in the EE Rising Star category, and the

latter resulted in Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award nominations for Best Actress in a

limited series or TV movie.

I'm talking, of course, about Caitlin Dever.

Over the course of our conversation, Der and I discussed the odds-defying

breaks that led her to Hollywood and the TV collaborators who helped to learn the

ropes once she arrived, the tricks of the trade that she learned from her various film projects, how book smart for which she had years to prepare and unbelievable for which she had barely any time to prepare at all, changed the way that she looks at her work and at life overall, plus much more.
