and since 2018 on HBO's massively popular and acclaimed drama series succession, on which he plays Kendall Roy, the second

oldest son of a billionaire media mogul, and for which he won the best actor in a drama

series Critics Choice Award back in January.

Over the course of our conversation, the 40-year-old and I discussed his roller coaster journey from

a hard-scrabble Boston neighborhood Neighborhood to Yale University to struggling New York

actor to prominent and appreciated Thespian. How interactions along the way with

Ian Home, Daniel Day Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and others helped to shape the sort of actor that he wanted to be.

How close he came to missing out on his part in McKay's The Big Short, which in turn ultimately led to his involvement in succession, the pilot of which

McKay directed and the series of which McKay EPs, and how he very nearly wound up playing

a different Roy sibling, plus much more.
