Summary

Justification is famously called the article upon which the church stands or falls. It is the article upon which The Lutheran Reformation stood boldly and confessed the Scriptural truth that we are made right before God by grace through faith on account of Christ alone. The Thinking Fellows address the central concepts that help us orginze and understand justification as a doctrine whihc the church not only teaches but proclaims boldly.

Hello and welcome to the Thinking Fellows podcast. My name is Caleb Keith, and today I am joined by Scott Keith, Adam Francisco, and Bruce Hillman. We are in our dogmatic series on the Thinking Fellows. We've been following an outline from Franz Piper. And today we get to sort of the central, not sort of, really, the central article of

0:41.1

Christian dogmatics, certainly the way Lutherans have presented them, the central article,

0:47.6

which is the article on justification.

0:50.9

This is an important one.

0:51.9

We actually delayed recording a couple of times to just make sure everybody could be here.

0:56.6

If you've listened to episodes of the Thank You Fellows recently, you've heard that people have been traveling and speaking and doing all sorts of things.

1:04.7

So there's been episodes where various people have been missing.

1:09.0

But today we got everybody together so that we could do justification.

1:15.2

So, I don't know, we need to hop in.

1:17.6

We've done several episodes on justification throughout the thinking fellows history.

1:23.5

In fact, the most recent one being a episode on justification by faith, I don't know,

1:30.3

just last fall. But today, we're doing it within the context of the dogmatic series. And I thought

1:38.9

it'd be good to, I don't know, ask a couple of questions, present maybe a problem or two.

1:46.0

I have a list of phrases that I think it would be, that in relation to justification, that I think it would be good to

1:50.3

explain. But I also have sort of an accusation that is made about the main article by some,

1:58.0

which is that justification in that word itself is a seemingly a legal term,

2:06.2

or maybe we could say if it's even too legal. And so what does justification involve? Why don't

2:13.1

we just stop with the last episode we did, which was saving faith. And why use this legal courtroom

2:20.2

term of justification at all? And not only why use it, we use it so much that we call it this

2:26.5

central article of faith.

2:31.9

Justification is the central article of faith because it's the the article that teaches how you are

2:38.0

reconciled to God after the fall into sin which we I think from the beginning of this series
