Summary

In Part 2 of this Frankly Series, Nate breaks down why energy - and specifically oil - is currently the central foundation of our entire modern economic system. There are ecological and energetic laws that apply to all life, including humans and our economies. By accessing a huge surplus of dense carbon energy in the form of fossil sunlight, we've effectively turbo-boosted our economies, populations, and material wealth - but what happens if this fossil abundance were to go away? What are the systemic implications of an economy tethered to growth, tethered to carbon? Is it even possible for us to choose to stop using oil? How do these complex constraints on our global systems affect the options - and most likely outcomes - in a future with declining oil availability and rising climate insecurity?

A word of caution or a word of authenticity.

1:03.0

I am not in these next two videos advocating for what we should do.

1:08.0

I am trying to observe and describe our situation. It is my deep belief

1:14.9

that describing the constraints of our situation eventually will inform better decisions,

1:21.7

better plans, better preparation. And I don't know if Nora would chastise me for saying this, but better emergence.

1:32.7

Okay, so last week briefly, we looked at the systemic implications of the serial refining of oil

1:42.7

and that if we suddenly didn't need gasoline, we would still need

1:47.1

roughly the same amount of oil because of the power and relevance of the middle distilates

1:51.5

and the asphalt, bunker fuel, plastic precursors, etc. Today I'm going to explain why,

1:59.3

at least for now, oil is the economy. And what I'm going to explain why, at least for now, oil is the economy.

2:02.6

And what I'm going to talk about next week is 10 pathways to post-growth economies, which would use less oil and fossil fuels.

2:12.6

So today is going to be a little bit of a long reflection. I hope I can remember everything.

2:19.7

I'm going to start by doing a whirlwind recap of the importance of energy and particularly

2:25.6

oil to our societies.

2:28.3

And then I'm going to talk about 10 systemic inferences.
