And on this episode, I'm going to be talking about the infamous 2013 Carnival Triumph disaster. Or as it's lovingly known by the traumatized internet,

the poop cruise. On February 7, 2013, Carnival Triumph departed Galvest in Texas for a four-day

cruise to Cozumel, Mexico.

There were more than 3,100 passengers and about 1,100 crew members.

On the morning of February 10th, now this was day three of the four-day crews,

a fire broke out in the aft engine room.

It was around 5.30 a.m. and the crew managed to extinguish the fire

and thankfully there were no injuries. But the fire knocked out most of the ship's power, which included

the air conditioning, lights, and yes, the plumbing. So the ship is dead in the water. There's no

engines, no flushing toilets, and minimal backup power. So the crews turned from a party

booze cruise into Fecesville really quickly. The triumph started drifting 77 miles off the Yucatan

Peninsula. Tugboats were soon dispatched, but it would take days to tow the ship back to shore.

In the meantime, passengers began experiencing what Carnival called an inconvenience.

But passengers called it a nightmare.

According to those on the boat, raw sewage ran down the walls.

People were sleeping in tents on the deck to escape not only the heat, but the smell. Toilets were overflowing into the

hallways and they had to use red biohazard bags to poop in. Conditions were so bad that media helicopters

flew overhead capturing passengers spelling out SOS in sheets on the deck. They were also

spelling out help with their bodies. Now, I'm giggling because that's totally something that we would

have done as well. Now, originally, the triumph was supposed to be towed to Progresso Mexico, but because of logistical

issues, the plan changed. It had drifted so far away from Mexico that it was actually closer to
