The ex-boyfriend in the Megan McDonald murder case has been acquitted in his second trial in three years.

45-year-old Edward Hawley broke down in tears when a jury acquitted him in the March 14, 2003,

bludgeoning death of Megan McDonald, the 20-year-old daughter of a former NYPD detective.

The panel deliberated for 14 days and reported being hopelessly deadlocked before returning the verdict.

With jurors telling news outlets like the Times Union, the case had a lot of holes,

and most didn't think he was innocent, but didn't have enough evidence.

Holly was first arrested in the cold case murder in April of 2023, two decades,

after McDonald was beaten to death inside her 1991 Mercury Sable and dumped along a dirt path. Holly was her ex, and early in

the case was a suspect. He was grilled but never charged at the time. Orange County prosecutors

reopened the case, citing DNA found in McDonald's car and on her cell phone. Holly's first trial

ended in a hung jury in 2024, prompting
