Summary

Anyone looking to kickstart her running habit—or begin a new one—will appreciate this episode featuring Jennifer Harrison, a veteran endurance coach and accomplished triathlete, and sport psychologist Erin Haugen, Ph.D. Along with the hosting duo of Sarah Bowen Shea and Amanda Loudin, they discuss:

  • how adding walks into your run can re-ignite joy
  • the natural ebb and flow of exercising
  • getting over the fear of re-injury
  • ways to shed the dread of a run
  • that your “why” doesn’t need to be a deep, meaningful thing

Before Coach Jen joins around 8:40, the hosts also enjoy a quick catch-up on work (Amanda) and family (Sarah).

Welcome to another mother runner, your best running friend in podcast form.

0:12.8

We do all the talking even on the uphills.

0:15.5

I'm your host, Sarah Bowen-Shay, and I'm joined by Amanda Loudon.

0:19.3

Welcome, Amanda, to the pod, back to the podcast and to YouTube,

0:24.6

New Frontier for us. New Frontier. New Frontier. And I think I kind of like it with that video,

0:31.3

but here I am. Yes. So, it's been about four months since we last talked. I would love to catch up on everything, but we don't have time for that. But given the time of year it is, I'm going to assume that you have not summited any Adirondack peaks since we last recorded. Is that right? That's correct. I think the first time I'll be up there

0:54.7

will be June. I am doing something a little ambitious right before that. Over Memorial Day

1:02.0

weekend, I saw the opportunity to through hike the Maryland section of the AT, which is 41 miles

1:10.2

in a day and doing it in a day.

1:12.9

And it's supported.

1:15.0

And so it's through the Appalachian Mountain Club.

1:17.7

So I thought, why not?

1:18.6

And I was able to recruit six of my running besties.

1:22.9

So we're just going to, on Saturday Memorial Day weekend, we're going to be at 4.30 in the morning, setting off across the whole stretch of Maryland. Wow, 41 miles in one, hiking in one day, that's significant. It's going to be a lot, yeah. And I don't know that any of us are doing anything really to prepare. It's just, you know, counting on running and lots of marathons under our belt. And, I mean, I mean, I'm going to continue to be hiking and, you know, all those things anyhow in the meantime. But that will set me up really nicely for summer in the Adirondacks. Yes. So wait. So what pace do you, like, what, are you, do you, is it going to be running? Is it going to be hiking those 41 miles like?

2:01.9

We're just, we're just hiking it. But they do, um, for this supported event, um, they do require that you can do two and a half to three miles an hour.

2:11.7

Um, which on the AT, I think is very doable. The AT in Maryland I think is very doable. I mean, I've run and hiked lots of

2:18.7

sections of the Maryland AT. So, yeah, in the Adirondacks, no, you can't do two and a half to three

2:25.8

miles. Is it kind of flat there in Maryland, the trail? No, it's rolling. It's definitely rolling.

2:33.0

You know, it has some good stretches. I think the slow? No, it's rolling. It's definitely rolling. It has some good, some good stretches.

2:36.8

I think the slowdown factor is kind of like the ankle biter rocks, you know, they're all around,

2:42.0

you know, about ankle height and you just have to, you know, navigate around them. But yeah,

2:47.1

yeah. So, so yes, we have that on the calendar. So it'll be fun. Wow, wow. And quite an adventure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, yes, we have that on the calendar. So it'll be fun. Wow. Wow. And quite an adventure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, and what's been one or two, especially interesting articles that you've written since we've talked maybe for the New York Times, the Wash Post, other publications?
