I'm Gianna Jalosi with your Fox True Crime Minute. A Juilliard trained pianist was found guilty

of murdering a woman after he claimed he killed her in order to protect her daughter from abuse.

A South Carolina jury found 32-year-old Zachary Hughes guilty of murdering 41-year-old Christina Parcell in October of 2021.

Hughes testified during his trial that he killed Parcel, a pet hospital staffer, to protect her child from abuse.

Parcel was locked in an ongoing custody battle with the child's father, John Mello, who Hughes was friends with. Hughes allegedly harassed her,

distributing nude photos before killing her. Prosecutors say Parcell's lifeless body was found with over 30

stab wounds, including to her jugular and carotid arteries. Rose petals were strewn throughout the crime scene.

Hughes told jurors that Mello offered him thousands of dollars to kill his ex-wife,

but Hughes refused the money.

Before he even left the witness stand,

police arrested and charged Mello as an accessory.

Hughes faces life in prison.

Mello could face the same sentence.
