Summary

Welcome to Season 6 of You Had Me at Black! This season we recorded all of our stories over Skype, which allowed us reach people in places we wouldn't have been able to otherwise. This week's story comes from Kelly, who grew up in predominantly white Utah. She never knew what her parents did for a living, then one day the cops showed up at her door.

0:16.7	welcome to our show. This is our sixth season premiere. We started this show three years ago with the mission to reclaim
0:22.2	the black narrative. We were tired of the white lens
0:25.9	through which black stories are usually told and created this show to give regular
0:31.2	people a microphone to share their stories in their own words.
0:35.0	Now when I say we I'm referring to my sister Brittany and two of our friends and
0:41.1	today our team has grown to eight people, all of whom
0:44.9	volunteer their time, skills, and coins to produce You Had Me Out Black as a
0:50.9	labor of love for our community. And to be honest that's been really
0:56.2	challenging at times, juggling work, school, and life on top of this really
1:02.0	important work. Our mission is big and it really
1:05.8	demand energy and focus and we've only scratched the surface. That's why this
1:12.3	season we're trying something new. Starting next week, we're
1:16.4	accepting contributions from our listeners and community to support the show.
