Author Kevin Kwan and director John M. Chu passionately wanted the movie version of Crazy Rich Asians to play in theaters.

So they turned down a huge offer from Netflix and took their chances with Warner Brothers.

Chu and Kwan talk about what they did for love when they made the first major studio movie to feature an all-Asian cast in years.

But first on the news banter, the Academy's

proposal to recognize most popular film, isn't that popular? Stick around. It's the business from

KCRW. I am joined by my associate in banter, Matt Bellany of the Hollywood reporter. Hello, Matt.

Hi there.

Well, so the howls from Hollywood are loud. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided, under pressure from ABC and the worst ratings in Oscar history last year, they have decided to change the rules.

And there's been a long back and forth over a long,

long time about how to make that telecast better. And every single time it sort of goes down

when members of the craft categories that people would want to eliminate from the live telecast

push back. You know, this is their night and they want to

be recognized. However, this time the board, the rather unwieldy board of the Academy, which includes

people from those crafts, have supported this idea of making some changes because it really does

start to feel rather dire now. But once again, the controversy is underway.

Yeah, and anytime the Academy does something like this, there is the immediate backlash.

But this one seems like it's the supercharged backlash.

Nobody seems happy about these proposed changes.
