Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Full Disclosure with me, James O'Brien,

a podcast project conceived chiefly so that I can spend a little bit more time than is ordinarily available with people who I hold in high esteem.

Half of that applies to this week's guest, John Sweeney, who I do indeed hold in high esteem, but who, unlike many previous guests on full disclosure, I do already know, and we have sort of worked together on the BBC's Newsnight programme.

John is a journalist, an investigative journalist par excellence,

also an author, and latterly a whistleblower.

And it is the whistleblowing to which we will be heading in the course of the conversation.

But we'll begin, as we always do, John, at the beginning.

And I suppose I want to know when you conceived a desire to become a journalist.

And for someone who was born in 1958, what that meant to your generation?

Oh, so I wanted to be a lawyer, and I went along.

My family is from Liverpool, but we moved around a lot,

and five years in Manchester, and then we moved down south to Hampshire.
