Summary

Matt has been called many things. One of the things he is most often called is a ‘hater’— a label he fittingly hates. But is it true? And if it IS true, is that necessarily a bad thing? To figure this out, Matt talks to culture critic John Semley, author of a book Matt loves called “Hater: On The Virtues Of Utter Disagreeability”. Matt and John surprisingly and perhaps disappointingly don’t disagree about much, but that allows them to dig deep into what it means to be a hater, what it means to be CALLED a hater, the difference between hating people versus hating the things they make, why modern movie fans get so mad when you criticize a movie they like, why Rotten Tomatoes is so terrible, why film criticism is so dead, why STARSHIP TROOPERS is so good, why JOJO RABBIT is so bad, how corporations eventually co-opt all cool things— and ultimately why being a ‘hater’ is more important than ever in today’s culture of what John calls ‘calcified consensus’. Also, for the very first time, a guest says “fuck you” to Matt. Matt welcomes this, and can’t wait to have John back on the show so he can say it again.
