Hello and welcome to the Americano podcast, a series of discussions about American politics, power and prejudices.

This year, 2024, is an election year in America, a presidential election year.

And so we will be doing two podcasts a week,

rather than our usual one, because we want to and because we know you can't get enough

Americano in your life. I am delighted to be joined by Professor John Meersheimer, who is a professor

of international relations at the University of Chicago. And I think officially a Chicagoan, we can now say, John, even though you're originally from New York.

That's correct.

Correct. But you've been here about 40 years, so you know the city pretty well.

I know the city quite well.

We're going to be talking today about the Democrats, Gaza and Ukraine, because obviously one of the side stories to this to this convention has been

that these protests, there were some arrests last night, and the pressure on the Democrats to denounce

Israel from the left of their party. And Joe Biden said these guys on the streets, they have

a point, but he fudged it slightly.

There have been a couple of other nods towards it. It will have to see what Kamala Harris says

when she speaks tomorrow. But is the Democratic Party capable of listening to what

pro-Palestinian protesters are saying? Are they going to? There's no question that they're

capable of listening and they are definitely listening,

because the progressive wing of the party is adamant about the need for the United States
