a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant writer. So, David, we started each one of our shows by having

our guest walkers through the arc of their career.

And you are an historian by trade, as well as an author.

Talk to us about your career arc in academia, and why did you decide to focus your scholarship on American political history?

Yeah.

You know, I began my career really as a journalist in the 90s.

I worked in Washington. I worked as an assistant. One of my

first jobs was as assistant to Bob Woodward. No better training than that to the skills of reporting

and book writing. I also worked at the New Republic magazine back when it was the liberal magazine everybody had to read.

And then at a certain point, I felt this kind of gnawing to take on things a bit more in-depth

than I felt I was able to do as a journalist and went to Columbia University for graduate school.

And since then, I've sort of tried to straddle these worlds

of public writing and scholarship. I teach at Rutgers University in both the Department of

Journalism and Media Studies and the History Department. And I have written a number of books.

My first book was on Richard Nixon called Nixon's Shadow.

I wrote a book called Republic of Spin, which is a history of the White House spin machine.

That came out just kind of around the time of the 2016 election. And then this was my latest project,
