Father Stephen is a former Protestant pastor and Bible teacher in the Reformed Church,

now an Orthodox priest serving at St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Charleston, West Virginia.

Just a minute. We'll be starting in gospel according to St. John chapter 12, verse 37.

But just to get us caught up a little bit in terms of where we were, we had mentioned before

that there's sort of this transition point beginning in John

chapter 11 where the gospel of John shifts the first ten chapters are everything that

St. John has to say about Jesus' life up to the last week of his life.

And then the other 11 chapters of the Gospel of John are basically about the last week of Christ's life.

So it is sort of loaded toward the end of Jesus' life.

And so we are now in chapter 12, we are in that week.

We've already read about the death of Lazarus and then the raising of Lazarus,

how that led into Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem,

sort of the excitement that that generated surrounding him.

And then we've also noted how, as Jesus repeatedly said, he was expecting that this is also now leading to a final confrontation with the religious authorities in Jerusalem.

You remember, St. John told us the pharisees of the chief priest

had essentially put out a warrant on jesus they had said you know if you if you spot him in in the

city here before the passover there's a reward if you come and tell us where he is so we can come

and arrest him and then immediately christ rides into town with a huge crowd,

singing enchanting, not really hiding from anyone.

So this is all sort of now leading up to this major confrontation.

And so right when we left off last time, it was after his entrance into Jerusalem.
